A Turkish Girl Sailing on the Ocean
H3A member Hülya Leigh and her husband have lived and sailed on their sail boat ” Blue Bella ” many years and visited most parts of the world.
She will share her experiences with us.

Hülya Leigh:
Hülya Leigh has graduated from Ankara University, DTCF,
Department of German Language and Literature. After working many years for German Airlines, in 1996 she got married to Derek Leigh.
Soon after selling their house, they started living in Blue Belle, a 36 ft sailing boat which was build by her husband Derek.
Between 1998 and 2004 they sailed the Mediterranean, Caribbean, rivers and canals on the eastern shores of the USA, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean twice.
Hülya Leigh, who has spent maximum 25 days at sea without seeing land, wrote a book about their life afloat, which has been published by Naviga Yayıncılık in Turkish in 2005, titled “Okyanusta bir Türk Kızı”. It has been reprinted in 2017.
Since Derek’s passing away in 2006, she has been writing freelance articles for Naviga Magazine and so far translated following nautical books from English into Turkish:

– 2008 Ellen McArthur “Taking on the World”;
– 2011 Joshua Slocum “Sailing Alone Around the World”;
– 2015 Steven Callahan “;Adrift”;
And the last book from Turkish to English:

She is currently living in Yalıkavak, Bodrum
