H3A Stroll in Uyku Vadisi (Sleep Valley) Sunday 13 October 2013

Rocky side of a Canyon

13 October, some sixty members of Bodrum’s Herodotus Third Age Academy left the Oasis Centre in a convoy of cars and drove to Uyku Vadisi – Sleep Valley – near Gökçeler village about 15 km from Milas. After a delicious Turkish breakfast served in the shade of leafy trees and with the soothing sound of running water in the background, we set off to explore the surrounding hills and valleys. Guler Bener and Selcuk Şahin were our guides for the walk and they sensibly catered for all abilities. The more adventurous – and fit – ones amongst us made it all the way up to the caves, a very worthwhile trek of about an hour. Those of us more inclined to simply soak up the natural beauty of the area chose not to venture as far but nevertheless found plenty to satisfy – and amuse – them on their stroll. There is something for everyone in Uyku Vadisi, which is open all year – challenging walks, easy strolls, delicious breakfasts/lunches, or just sitting in the shade with a cool drink playing tavla or Scrabble!
