Our esteemed member, researcher archaeologist, tour guide, and Caria expert C. Canan Küçükeren, will highlight the maritime characteristics of the Carians in this presentation:
“The Carians, one of the first settled peoples of southwestern Anatolia, were a civilization that raised the world’s first female admirals, Artemisia I and II, gifted us the Mausoleum of Satrap Mausolos—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—and, in honor of this monumental tomb, introduced the word ‘mausoleum’ to global literature. They successfully preserved their culture and traditions for thousands of years. According to ancient Egyptian sources, the Carians who came to Egypt for work were known as ‘bronze men from the sea.’”
